We live in an age of generational segregation. We send our children to schools to be educated exclusively with their peers. We have “active retirement” communities on one side of town and “single-family starter homes” on the other. Even within the church, we often create well-meaning support groups strictly by “life stage.”

But what if we are losing something precious by catering only to age-specific needs?

For most of human history, life was lived in a messy, overlapping pile of grandparents, toddlers, and everyone in between. Today, we’ve prioritized efficiency and specialization, but the unintended side effect is a “siloed” society.

The Cost of the “Silo”

One place this siloing is most visible is in our worship services. The common routine is to check children into their kids’ class, then head to the auditorium for the “adult” service. As Ecclesiastes reminds us, there is a time and place for everything under the sun; there is certainly a place for age-appropriate teaching and peer fellowship. However, if our children never experience worship across generations, we risk robbing them of a beautiful opportunity to witness the full body of Christ in action.

When a child sits in the service, they aren’t just occupying a seat; they are witnessing a lifestyle. They are watching their parents bow in prayer and lift their voices in song. They are participating in the most sacred moment of our week—the taking of communion to remember the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. In those moments, we are showing them that church isn’t just a place we attend; it’s a Body we belong to. It’s a place where every member matters, not just the parts that feel familiar or comfortable.

A New Rhythm for our Families

We are excited to begin a new chapter in the West Region of the DFW Church. Starting this week, we are integrating our children into the beginning of our worship service so our families can participate together.

While we are still offering age-specific classes, we are intentional about starting our time as one body. We want every generation to experience the beauty of fellowship, the power of singing, and the sacredness of communion together.

Equipping at Home

To help families navigate this transition, we’ve developed a series of devotionals focused on the “Why” behind the “What.” These guides aren’t just about behavior; they are about understanding the heart behind our worship. The series includes a foundational lesson on what it means to worship God, followed by four supporting devotionals:

  • Singing
  • Listening
  • Fellowship
  • Communion

You can find all these devotionals here: Family Worship Devotionals

A Legacy of Faith

Whether you are part of our local region or a parent halfway across the world, we invite you to use these resources. Our goal is to move children from being spectators of their parents’ faith to being active participants in their own.

Worship is not a performance we watch; it is a lifestyle we practice. By breaking down the silos and inviting our children to the table, we aren’t just making Worship Service more “family-friendly”; we are building a legacy. We are showing the next generation that living by God’s design is the fullest, most joyful way to live.
